Wikkelhouse – a unique light weight, modular, sustainable house recently won the German Bundespreis Ecodesign 2019 award.
Made up of 1.2 meter deep modules, each segment can easily be connected, extended and disconnected. While its core is made composed of virgin fiber cardboard, it is wrapped around a unique patented house-shaped mould.
Designed and developed by Amsterdam based company Fiction Factory, Wikkelhouse get’s it name from Dutch word ‘Wikkelen’ i.e. wrapping. Intended to be composed, extended and used as a smart home, it includes segment having kitchen, shower and bathroom.
One can enter the living cum workspace through a porch module !

After cardboard is wrapped around each segment, it’s covered with a waterproof but breathable foil to rule out drenching in rains. The outside paneling made of stained pinewood not only protects against UV/sunlight but also make it appealing to eyes !

The prestigious German Bundespreis Ecodesign 2019 has been awarded to the Dutch design Wikkelhouse. According to Maria Krautzberger, Präsidentin des Umweltbundesamtes, the sustainable modular housing concept stood out from all other concepts due to the innovative design where an everyday product (cardboard) finds new purpose.

This award, Germany’s highest state award for ecological design recognizes innovative products and concepts that embody high ecological and aesthetic aspirations. Focusing on life-cycle thinking, longevity (including aesthetic longevity), the responsible use of resources and the prevention of pollutants and waste.
Easily portable – Wikkelhouse !
The owner of Wikkelhouse, Oep Schilling, accepted the award on behalf of the entire Wikkelhouse team: ‘I think it’s a clear sign the world is changing if Wikkel- house is presented the Bundespreis in Germany for a house made of cardboard. ’Since Wikkelhouse is sustainably produced and made of material that have minimal impact on the environment, it is three times more eco-friendly than traditional housing.

Moreover, the segments can be reused over and over again and are 100% recyclable. Wikkelhouse meets the required criteria for temporary or permanent housing and has an expected life cycle of 30 years minimum.

Wikkelhouse placed more than 60 temporary or permanent Wikkelhouses in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, UK and Scandinavia, and from 2020 expanding to Chile.

The German Federal Ecodesign Award is Germany’s highest state award for ecological design. The award launched in 2012 by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and the German Environment Agency, recognizes innovative products and concepts that embody high ecological and aesthetic aspirations.
